Passage to India

Well, I’m finally on the way to India. My visa was delayed at the Indian consulate in San Francisco, so I missed my flight yesterday. But after rescheduling a couple of times, and having my passport and visa sent via FedEx to their Sea-Tac airport air cargo location, where I picked it up an hour ago, I’m on my way.

I’m going through Amsterdam and Mumbai, then I’ll have a 3:00AM flight out of Mumbai to Bangalore, which gets me in at 5:40AM, just in time to shower and shave before the Office 12 workshop begins across town. I’m flying coach on that final flight into Bangalore, and I’ll need to wait in line to get my boarding pass because they couldn’t issue one at Sea-Tac. For reasons unknown, of course — the same reason my Indian visa was delayed, the same reason so many things will likely happen in the week ahead.

That feeling of being a flea on a dancing elephant, of being a mere cog in a complex mechanism beyond my comprehension or control … ahh, India, here I come!

  1. Have fun, babe!

  2. just wondering, do you remember what home looks like?

  3. Vaguely. It’s the place where the cats go nuts at 5:00AM every day, right?

I’m at the airport in Amsterdam, trying to stay away from a Nikon flash that’s calling to me from the electronics store. Must be strong.

The guy sitting next to me on the flight turned out to have an office about 40 feet from mine at work, but we had never met before. Most of the people around us were Microsoft folks headed for various destinations in India, so they’ll all be on the flight to Mumbai next as well.

The in-flight tracking system that shows where your plane is currently located crashed and a bunch of Linux error messages appeared on all the screens for a while. We didn’t take any pleasure in that, of course. :-)

OK, time for breakfast at our usual table, Megan. Miss you.

  4. Hope you got photos of the Linux error messages. People so relish sending the Microsoft ones around.

Okay, off to 5100…. Or maybe I’ll just stay here. The cats are outside and the quiet is wonderful.

Missed you at Robyn last night. It was a great show - he had Sean Nelson from Harvey Danger there, that guy from REM who looks like Pat Simmons, and some other great musicians playing with him.

    Love you!

    Megan
