What happened to the blog?
Hmm, doesn’t seem to be much going on around here. In fact, it’s the longest between posts on the blog ever. Same for the work blog.
Well, remember that graph I posted a few weeks ago? The launch is next week (I hope it’s OK to say that now!), so that’s probably explanation enough.
The funny thing is, I don’t really have anything to do with the launch at all. I just happen to have a big deadline that comes on the very same day: Friday, November 30. That evening, while Bill and Steve are toasting the town in Manhattan or wherever they’ll be, I’ll be packing my bags for a trip to Paris to deliver a 3-day workshop on my favorite technical topic these days, Open XML.
And by my current calculations, if I don’t sleep more than 6 hours a day, don’t take a day off, never go out to eat, never workout, and don’t do any chores around the house (please pretend that’s something new, Megan), I should be ready by mid-afternoon next Friday.
Here’s my current desktop configuration, optimized for the task at hand. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

You know, I’m on my second Toshiba laptop, and their electrical systems stink. Everything gets too hot, and (in the case of the one I’m writing on now) the case shorts out and restarts the machine randomly (but only if you touch the speakers, which are placed directly under each palm when typing). I suspect it may not be any strain that you’re putting on it that’s making it die — it may just be another Toshiba lemon.
They’ve got the best keyboards outside of the ThinkPad, though. Particularly as the radiant heat from under the keyboard softens the keys so they mold over time to the exact resting position your fingers find.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, too — I just went out and hit a big bucket of balls up here in Lake Geneva. Had the range to myself for most of it, too (though apparently all the courses in the area are stacked up with golfers this Thanksgiving morning because of the good weather).

Man, hitting golf balls. Sounds fun. Luckily it’s raining here, so I’m not feeling too sorry for myself being stuck inside.
Yeah, Toshiba seems to have heat-management problems. On this M4, when I load that Ecma spec, Word start paginating all 5000 pages of it, and within a matter of seconds the fan comes on full-blast and things start getting even hotter. By setting up a second laptop for the spec, I haven’t had the fan on high yet today.
This Dell XPS M1710 I borrowed is a rock: big, heavy, fast, great screen … and about $3500. I need to make a case for upgrading soon.
Hit ‘em straight … or long, if not both.

Hmm, I wonder if I can figure out how to put that futon together myself…

Pardon the non-professional’s two cents, but I’m on my fourth or fifth Toshiba, and it seems I’m just a glutton for punishment. Following my recent hard drive explosion, the data recovery expert (who seems to charge more than your average neurosurgeon)asked a couple of questions and promptly stated: “Oh, it must be a Toshiba hard drive, probably around three years old.”
He’s right, of course, and I’m looking at Dell.

Yeah, Toshiba seems to have fallen behind the others in recent years. This Dell I’m using is impressing me more every day.

Get a Mac!

Geez, there’s one in every crowd.
I’d love to make an open-minded comparison between a state-of-the-art Mac and a state-of-the-art Windows machine. The thing is, it would take a person who knows each platform well, and is willing to have a calm fact-based discussion with the person on the other side. I don’t know how to make that happen though (has that ever happened?), so I spend my time having irrational knee-jerk reactions to the irrational knee-jerk reactions of others, none of us really seeing the big picture.
In other words, I’D RATHER DIE THAN USE A MAC! MACS ARE FOR IDIOTS!
Man, I think I’ve been working too much or something.

Scott - get a copy of Spinrite http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm - there’s a good chance you can recover the data off the Toshiba yourself.
Meanwhile, I’m really bored with the Mac vs PC religious debate (not just here). “Can’t we all just get along?” -RK.
After all, it’s a tool - not a way of life(or is it?). We have a couple of Macs and several PC’s here. While both systems have their own unique foibles they each do their appointed tasks just fine with one thing in common - they all cost too much.
