A few photos

I borrowed a cable from my colleague Vijay to download my camera, but I still haven’t got out to take any pictures. So these are a few of the flight here, my hotel room, the view from my room, and the Linux Asia conference I attended yesterday. I may get out for some photos later today or tomorrow. Or not — there’s a ton of work to do, it’s nice to have a hotel room where I can just hide from the world and have some uninterrupted time. I may leave the tourist adventurism for when I come back to Delhi with Megan.

For those who don’t know, that’s Mount Rainier in the first photo, and Mount Adams in the distance to the right.

Megan, for the meetings with government people I wore the nice outfits you bought me, but for Linux Asia the Sybaris shirt just felt right. Not sure why.

  1. What’s with the penguin?

  2. The aircraft-view of Mount Rainier is awesome. I really, really have digital envy, and everytime I look at your scenic and travel photos I become insanely jealous. (The cat photos are close runners-up.)

Ok, Ok, I just have to keep saving up my allowance … Have a great trip and don’t come back with sardine breath from mixin’ with the penguins.

  3. The penguin, Dear, is the Linux logo. There were penguins everywhere at the conference, of course.

Dennis, the Linux crowd was very welcoming. I suppose there were folks there who would have an attitude about Microsoft, but of course they’re not the ones who took the time to talk to me. :-) I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly reception from several people, all of whom felt it was a good thing for Microsoft to be engaged in dialog with the open-source community.

As for digital envy, I’d try to sell you my D70 so I can upgrade to a D200, but I’m afraid I’m wearing it out. Let’s both get D300s when they come out!

  4. What’s with the penguin?

I have Linux geek friends who just sat bolt upright as you typed that, whispering about a great disturbance in the Force. I think it pains them that they HATE Microsoft so deeply while most Microsoft employees don’t even know who their mascot is. It reminds me of Cubs fans vs. Sox fans — Sox fans hate the Cubs and put decals on their cars (if you can call them that) to that effect, and Cubs fans may have heard of that team on the south side.

Generally speaking, unless I’m hanging out with you and Doug, I can’t go more than a few feet with my other geek friends without some kind of stuffed penguin, penguin reference, killer-penguin-who-eats-Seattle joke, etc. He’s a cute little penguin, as rabid insecure zealot mascots go. Personally, though, I always thought his pupils looked a little, er, big. I’ve always wondered exactly what was in his chum salad.

  5. By the way, once you have kids it’s GREAT to have Linux friends. You end up with a LOT of penguin toys. Though maybe not if you live in Redmond.

And don’t worry about upsetting the force — my Linux friends are ALWAYS whispering about disturbances in the force (and bullseyeing womp rats in their T-16s back home).

  6. On thing I regret missing was that “Subversion Workshop” mentioned on the sign out front. Let’s see, according to Webster:

    Subversion - Noun:
    1. Destroying someone’s (or some group’s) honesty or loyalty; undermining moral integrity; “corruption of a minor”; “the big city’s subversion of rural innocence”.
    2. The act of subverting; as overthrowing or destroying a legally constituted government.

Sounds like I missed out on some fun!

  7. hey i know this guy on the east side of the state that would love a slightly wore out d70. but do you have in house payment plans?

  8. Maybe it’s because I have watched this movie way too many times, or I have some uncanny ability to remember the bit-characters from movies, but the Linux penguin looks just like Wheezy from “Toy Story”. Except for his dapper bow tie…
