Friday the 13th

Friday was an ugly day. More on that later. But for now, you’ll note this blog is a mess, as is Megan’s blog, as is my work blog.

They’ve all been screwed up since Friday, when a bill came due for the hosting and domain-name registration, and the debit card on file was the one $#@!%* Sterling Savings Banks had thoughtfully cancelled last month because of all those mysterious transactions all over the planet in recent weeks. I got the new billing info to Verio on Friday for the site hosting, things were back to normal briefly, then on Saturday I discovered the domain-name registration had lapsed. Verio handles both, but apparently their two billing departments don’t share info or something.

So now I’ve been assured this morning that things will be back to normal in 24-48 hours. Meanwhile … enjoy your summer!

  1. Yes! It seems to be back up.

By the way, if anybody sent email to any address at mahugh.com in the last couple of days, that probably didn’t go through either.

  2. Hey, congratulations. I’ve been watching and keeping mum, as I have some experience in the “things are blowing up and people keep telling me that things are blowing up” department.

I did go run a WHOIS check on mahugh.com, and see that Verio uses MelbourneIT as its registrar. VIANetworks, which used to be IMC Online, also uses MelbourneIT, and I burned literally over 30 hours trying to get a client’s domain out of hock because of an error on VIANetworks’ part. MelbourneIT is not easy to deal with. Again, I was about to write to offer emotional support, but then remembered all the helpful e-mails I’ve gotten over the years from other geeks saying things like, “yeah, those guys suck!”

The glow of knowing other people have been screwed in the same way is very quick and fleeting. After that, it’s just an exercise in patience with your friends. But suffice it to say, I’ve been where you’ve been with this ISP/registrar stuff, and I have been watching carefully and wincing on your behalf. Maybe you felt it.

Anyhow, I’ll keep watching for your Friday story. I hope it was just stupid technical stuff.

Did you get to take the week off this week like you hoped?

  3. Oh, and I apologize for the e-mail on Friday telling you things were blowing up. :)

  4. It’s the price some are paying for the emergence of the new Global Man. Average peeps can’t comprehend a guy bouncing all over the globe like that. Get back in the cave like them and they’ll leave you alone… And don’t mention that their hands are not really chained to the walls. That only makes them mad!

  5. Ugh. I’ve been doing some reading tonight about Friday, and I may be starting to see why Friday stunk for you. Sorry. Tad may have a good idea there … caves are nice and cool and quite quiet.

  6. Oh, Tom, you were just one of many emails about things blowing up on Friday. :-)

OK, time to go beat the cat … again …

  7. “He has been self-righteously aloof ever since. He learned nothing.”

You meant righteously aloof. His portrait shared the telephone pole that once held a Nirvana flyer years earlier. He learned nothing because there was nothing to learn which he did not already know.

That speaks well for the cat.
