Bellevue in a spotlight

I’m taking a few days off, staying at home and hiding from the world. After all the travel and other activities lately, that sounds more exciting than any exotic vacation. Megan’s working this week, but she worked from home today and I managed to talk her into going out to a liesurely lunch with me.

It rained today. What a drag. I was trying to decide whether to take a bike ride, play golf, go on a photo safari, or all of the above. Instead, I stayed indoors. But man, the home office is really tidy now. Sigh. Maybe tomorrow.

Oh yeah, the pictures above. Nice twilight this evening, with dark shadows all around except for two spotlights where holes in the clouds west of Seattle let the sun shine over our shoulders. One spotlight hit Bellevue, and the other hit I-90 coming off Mercer Island.

And here are a couple more photos that don’t really fit in anywhere: Megan and Fish (he’s starting to win her back), and me walking around DC waiting for my hotel room to be available after the 24-hour trip from Delhi a couple weeks ago. That’s a shot taken with my new phone, and about as good as it gets with that camera.

With any luck, I’ll have more interesting photos to post tomorrow.

  1. Wow, they seem to be building a lot of buildings in Bellevue. Or they have a lot of cranes, at any rate.

  2. Yeah, lots of cranes. Bellevue is booming.

And all those cranes can be dangerous:

Update: I figured out which crane in that photo is the replacement for the one that collapsed last November. This one.

  3. Amazing.

It’s been 4 years since I have visited that area.

I think that area has a great road system. Unfortunately Seattle outgrew it 15 years ago.

I have fond memories on my last trip being stuck in a traffic jam on the way to Ray’s Boathouse at 4:00PM (yes, 4:00PM) with a very pregnant wife.

P.S. We did make it to Ray’s but for a period of time I thought the nearest McDonalds was going to be our dinner.

P.S.S. Big Macs vs. Salmon is not something you want to think about.

  4. Hey Dave, welcome to Seattle! So to speak. Let me know when you’re next headed for Ray’s, I’ll meet you there for a beer. :-)

I never heard it said that way, but I agree. The road system is great here, there are just too many people on it.

  5. Hey, did you ever get out golfing this week?

  6. No. Rain.

We had several weeks of non-stop sunny weather around here, until I was in town and had some time off. Well, there was the matter of searching for a cat last weekend — those two days were quite nice, weather-wise.

Forecast says we’ll be back to summer come Monday …

  7. you were in DC????

Do you not have Mal’s contact info???? Did Megan not tell you how grand a host he is? With that extra bedroom?

    Mal? You readin this???
    (he’s a lurker!)
ok–back in a month or so….been fun/thanks for having me.

  8. Yes, I was in DC. Here’s how it went:

Wednesday: arrive from Delhi, hotel room isn’t ready, wander around the neighborhood a bit enjoying the heat and humidity, meet with co-workers, take a nap, get really really sick.
Thursday: go to an all-day meeting, back to hotel to meet with co-workers, then even more sick, up most of the night.
Friday: go to Sibley Memorial Hospital emergency room (after calling Jamal’s cell to get a hospital recommendation but he didn’t answer and I called somebody else — that’s the mysterious 425-xxx-xxxx on 6/29), spend a few hours getting tests and saline fluids, go back to the hotel, crash
Saturday: meet with co-workers, then head over to the airport and go home

I had thought of trying to see Jamal, but the only way to get out of spending time with co-workers was this whole elaborate “I got sick in Delhi” story I’ve been telling. If only it weren’t true, I could have been out with Jamal Thursday or Friday evening!

  10. Hi Doug,

Just came across your blog while looking for pictures of DT Bellevue. I grabbed a copy of your cool pic above for my blog - linking back to you with credit and all. I hope that’s OK - it’s a perfect way to describe the boom. Come by and see, and I’ll take it down if you want me to.

Seeing you’re in the tech area, you might want to check out the Seattle Business category on my blog. Please stop by.

    Take Care,

    Greg Lins

  11. No problem at all, Greg, and thanks for letting me know. Bellevue is indeed booming, and we have a front-row view from across the lake.
