We were out in the San Francisco Bay when the Blue Angels were here and I think (at least in our neighborhood) that they are flying a little higher and further away. They use to fly between buildings in San Francisco (as I recollect). They don't even fly over the City anymore.

They certainly fly farther out in Chicago than they used to for the Air Show, and I bet it's similar there. I don't know for sure, but I can't imagine that it's not a reaction to 9/11. Used to be we'd get totally buzzed at our place right at the lake (and even several blocks inland), and now they do all of their turns well out over the lake. I'm sure radar and radio security is ridiculously tight for such an event, so maybe they're just trying to alleviate some of the irrational fears people now have about low-flying planes over urban areas.

I'm bummed, personally -- I always liked getting that tooth-rattling roar at random times the week before the show. And seeing a stealth bomber go cooking right past your living room window was neat, too. Now they're way out there -- still recognizable if you're right at the lakefront, but not like the weird invasiony feeling it used to have.

The other cool thing about that apartment was that every time Bill Clinton was in town, we'd see the presidential helicopters go by our balcony, hugging the lake shore (probably going from the Glenview Air Station to downtown). There were usually three or four Marine copters, sometimes all together and sometimes scattered around. From the ground they were all identical, but one of them held the president. It was just cool to look out and see that go by at eye level.
