More HDR

All things in moderation, that’s what I always say. These are taken down at the Leschi marina a few blocks from where we live.
This Photomatix software makes me want to go back to Venice. When we were there in 2005, I took many bracketed sets of photos on a tripod, but then I decided I didn’t want to waste so much disk space, so I deleted all but my favorite exposure in each of those series. This shot, for example, which happens to be the top example on Photomatix’s examples page. Small world.

Oh man, it’s like weird movie stuff. I love it. So let me see, there is an auto-bracket system in the D80, so I should be able to get -1.5ev, 1.5ev for free right?
And I guess I need to find out if my camera will take SDHC 4gb memory cards, huh? I know it will take 2gb SD and maybe it is time to upgrade at least that much. Sheesh.
I tried to make one of those string bobs so I could do panoramas, but I need to redo it better. The twine keeps snarling up so I need to add a winder (probably the cardboard cylinder from a roll of toilet paper until I find something better).
Heh.

Yeah, you should be able to do everything you need with the D80. FYI, they recommend 2/0/-2 for most scenes, and that’s what I’ve been using. Trey Ratcliff says he usually does that, and for scenes with extreme range of brightness he’ll do -2/-1/0/ 1/ 2. I think you generally get more detail with more source images, but the result looks more realistic with fewer source images, based on my tests.
