Yeah, Marsha, that snow on the bridge was amazing. About eight feet deep, and two or three feet wide. We didn't trust it, but then we watched two big guys walk across. Quickly.

Yes, we're driving. Too bad gas is over $4 a gallon now. Looking forward to the trip though.

Huh.

Sounds pretty daring to me...too daring.
Was looking at one picture of snow banked on a bridge? Hard to believe all of this is still happening with weather hitting the upper 80's now in the lower states, with tornadic activity off the map.

Lynn, I take it you plan to drive there w/Stella? when?

We have begun to seriously look for a house now, so all time outs for us are pretty much out, I guess.

Love, love, be safe/have fun.

We're up for trying anything. Today, on campus, Stella caught herself just before jumping over a wall that had a two story drop on the other side. Good thing she noticed it. I didn't until it would have been too late. I don't want to be near rushing water but anything relatively safe I'll try. It would be the most fun if you and Megan join us on the walk.

That's about 50 miles from home, but good paved road all the way until the last couple of miles. Here is Heather Lake's location on a map:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=48.071011,-121.783104&spn=0.013091,0.033731&t=h&z=16

There were several off-leash dogs on the trail, but I don't think I'd take a dog there off-leash during spring runoff. There are many collapsing banks of snow, rushing streams, steep rocky embankments, and other things a curious dog might turn into a big problem pretty fast. Speaking of ... there's a great sign at the Ranger station in Verlot (near this hike) that shows a dog (boxer) stranded on a rock sticking out of the center of a roaring whitewater river. A search&rescue worker in a body suit, helmet, and life jacket is hanging from a steel cable strung across above the river, reaching down to try to pluck the terrified dog off the rock. The caption reads "Please keep your dog on a leash." :-)

But having shared that killjoy image, yes there are great places to take your dog off-leash around here, just not up in that area. Beaches along the Sound are a great option, and Mom or I can tell you some good spots. And maybe Stella can test-drive the nearby dog park -- we're curious what the scene is like there, since it's the nearest place we could bring a dog to run free. If we were to get one. Theoretically speaking.

Trail looks good. How far is it from your house? Is that a place where we can hike with Stella? If you know of any places in the Seattle area (or Spokane) where we can hike/walk with the dog, preferably off leash, let us know.
